Scandinavia Since 1500
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Minnesota Pr (Txt) (June, 2001)
Author: Byron J. Nordstrom
Average review score:

Good, comprehensive text
My Scandinavian history professor recommended this book to me. What he didn't tell me is that he was mentioned in the preface of the book (the author obviously used my professor's book for a reference). Anyway, the book does a great job detailing the economic, political, and cultural situations in Scandinavia dating from 1500 to the present. If I were a professor teaching this kind of history, I would definitely require this as a text because of it's comprehensiveness and how relatively short it is. It's a good book for those interested in Scandinavian studies.

Scandinavian Cooking: Classic Cooking from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland
Published in Hardcover by Book Sales (March, 1995)
Authors: Sonia Maxwell and Sonya Maxwell
Average review score:

Great, easy-to-follow recipes
This great cookbook has a wealth of Scandinavian recipes (113, if I counted correctly), organized into seven chapters: soups, appetizers and snacks, fish and shellfish, meat poultry and game, vegetable dishes and salads, desserts, and cakes cookies and breads. Each recipe has the flag of its country of origin, so you can even pick-and-choose among the nation of your choice, if you so wish.

The text is reasonably large, and the book is large enough to lay open without anything holding it open, which I liked. Wonderful pictures are scattered throughout, thought I could have wished for more. (That's a small complaint, though.)

So far, I have made the Potato Dumplings Stuffed with Bacon (p.56) and the Sour Cream Waffles (p. 96), and both were delicious! I am planning on making several other things, but I have no basis to comment on them, yet. Overall, I found this to be a very nice cookbook, one well worth having!

Suomalaiset muistokirjat ja muistokirjamerkinnät ennen isoavihaa

Classic
This is without question one of the great literary works in history. I would rank it up there with War and Peace. It is a true epic, that thoroughly explores each character with great depth. More importantly it is an accurate reflection of our society as we move forward into the 21st century. Even though it is nearly 3,000 pages, you can't put it down for very long. You cannot consider yourself a true student of fine works of literature without reading this one. No library is complete without it.

Finnish Recipes and Traditions
Sinikka Grönberg Garcia, author of Suomi Specialties: Finnish Celebrations, Traditions and Recipes, claims to be mostly Finn even though she has lived in the United States for over forty years. A Karelian refugee from the 1941 Russian-Finnish War, she says her bond to Finnishness grew through the hardships as well as good times.

This book presents the traditions and customs that represent a national pride and fortitude. Told with warmth, Sinikka's memories lend an understanding to what it means to be a Finnish American.

Along with the ways and means of holidays, customs, and celebrations, traditional recipes are included with helpful hints and significance of the foods of the season....Pulla for Christmas, Mämmi for Easter, Sima for Vappu, and others.

Sections on a brief history of the people; travel in Finland, and the many music festivals characterize the Finnish people's love for the arts.

Drawings by Jukko Mannio, Finnish artist, capture the spirit of celebration throughout the book.

Cover photography by Joan Liffring-Zug Bourret.

Insight Compact Guide Finland (Insight Compact Guides)
Published in Paperback by Insight Guides (January, 2000)
Authors: Reinhard Rode and Insight Guides
Average review score:

Great book for getting guick background on Finland
The Insight Guide series is, in general, a really good introduction to any of the countries that they have chosen to focus on. This one on Finland, like all of them, is full of great photo's and good historical, economic, social, and political descriptions.

The tourist descriptions of what to see, places to stay and eat, etc. always seem to be pretty good and accurate.

Lots of lovely memories
Insight Compact Guides are great. This one has 12 routes for you to follow as you travel through this stunningly beautiful country. All the major sights are featured with pictures and a rating. I like this feature since - as you will find - the authors are pretty good judges of what is worth seeing and what is not. It's also nice to see the Aland Islands included as one of the trips. My wife and I had a tremendous time cycling around them in the early autumn of 1999 - when the sea and sky were deep blue and the myriad forests a swathe of gold and red.

There are two big selling points for these guide books. One they are very small, light and easy to follow. Two, into a mere 100 odd pages, the authors have crammed a wealth of info/pictures on the country, its history, culture, customs - as well as 12 unforgettable journey's.

Five stars and lots of lovely memories.

Tom of Finland: The Art of Pleasure
Published in Hardcover by TASCHEN America Llc (15 June, 2002)
Authors: Tom and Micha Ramakers
Average review score:

Recommended
His art is about high-octane masculinity, with every straining muscle of these muscular bodies lovingly detailed under clothing about to rip apart at the seams. And that includes the crucial zone below the belt, both fore and aft. There was nothing ambiguous about Tom of Finland's interest in drawing, I know it's no good," he himself said. The eroticism is naked, even aggressive. The poses inevitably consigned his work to the pornography shelves, and the walls of leather bars in the gay scene. So far there has been no account of the artistic virtuosity of his work.

The present volume traces the life and career of this important artist. Born in southern Finland, Tom played the piano at local coffee shops to supplement his income as a graphic artist until his watercolors of male sexuality began to appear as covers on major American gay publications. His impact as an artist has since stretched far beyond the gay scene.

About the Author

Micha Ramakers is an art historian. He has written extensively on the work of Tom of Finland and other visual expressions of post-war gay subcultures. He has been a writer and editor for a number of gay and lesbian magazines and a contributor to several books on international lesbian and gay politics. He has also been the curator and director of the gay and lesbian film festival in Brussels, where he lives.

Text in English / German / French, approximately 350 pages, 500 illustrations

Tom Of Finland: The Art Of Pleasure
Tom Of Finland, a name that changed the self-image of almost all gay men from the late 1940s to the present day.

This book is not just pornography, it is a wake up call of gay awareness. Large, thick and hot, this book has many examples of Tom's artistic and sexual contribution on a large coffee table format and high quality paper.

It's both thought provoking and erotic. It transformed the effeminate gay self image with one that is all man, and very masculine. It is nothing less than an icon.

Obsession of manlyness
No one has surpassed old Tom in gay male erotic art.Tom himself call it pornography:but it is not.It is a picture of desire.Of sheer perfection. Only bad art is porn.Tom's is superb erotic craft.

Jonas of Kiivijarvi: Finnish Freedom Fighter
Published in Paperback by North Star Press of St. Cloud, Inc. (01 June, 1996)
Author: Leslie W. Wisuri
Average review score:

For the kids ...
The writing isn't great. The story IS interesting. But this isn't literature. To be appreciated mostly by the younger teens. True story or fiction? Doesn't matter. If you've read anything about the Finns you'll already know that they're a tough and resourceful people. In this book they're nearly psychic. The russians cop an awful beating though, at times made to look almost sub-human. It's cheap. Buy it. But not if you're a russian.

Interesting subcurrent is the obvious anti-russian sentiment. Considering the time this was written, maybe it was subconsciously also anti-soviet?

True adventure stories that read like a finely crafted novel
When, after conflict lasting a year and a half, a Russian army of 85,000 finally defeated a force of 12,000 Finns, Finland became a Grand Duchy of Russia in 1808, and a rebel movement was born. Jonas Wisuri emigrated from Finland near the turn of the next century, after Finland had been under Russian rule for nearly a hundred years, bringing with him stories of the "Ghost", a Finnish freedom fighter. Leslie Wisuri has collected these stories in Jonas Of Kiivijarvi: Finnish Freedom Fighter into a book that reads like a finely crafted novel, but which Leslie believes were true stories from Jonas' own life and experiences.

Not just for history buffs!
A great read! I really enjoyed the book. Great story line that made you keep reading. Interesting even if you know nothing about that time period.
